at UC San Diego houses a team of top IT professionals developing innovative technology for higher education. We serve a large and diverse clientele and are
always working to increase the functionality and usability of campus technology for all users. The Director of the Data Center will direct and coordinate
the operation of the ACT Data Center providing UC San Diego's central administrative computing and campus information systems processing for more than 100,000
students, faculty, staff, parents, and affiliates. The Data Center supports numerous large servers, dozens of applications, a multi TB campus-wide
data warehouse and a sophisticated single sign-on system.
Responsibilities Include:
- Planning, budgeting and operating the Data Center (about $5-$10M annual budget and ~30 employees).
- Leadership for campus information technology efforts through strategic planning, systems management, resource acquisition, new technology
evaluation and user consultation.
- Developing and implementing policies, operational procedures, organizational structures and establishing quality control standards / procedures
that will improve timeliness and quality of service to campus end users.
- Leading and directing technical teams responsible for the development and delivery of infrastructure systems and services and responding to the present
and future needs of the organization.
- Leadership in building partnerships and identifying opportunities to support campus information technology services.
- Vision and leadership for University-wide emerging technology infrastructures and applications through consultation and understanding of user needs.
- Participating on campus and UC-wide committees representing the campus at UC-wide meetings for technology best practices, purchasing agreements,
participating in the UC Joint Data Center Managers Group, and acting as a consultant for other campus departments as needed
Qualifications:
- Experience of at least 15 years in managing in a large commercial, government, or higher education institution with substantial experience utilizing
state-of-the-art IBM, Windows and UNIX hardware and software, with a complex data communications requirement.
- Bachelor degree in business/management, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline. Graduate degree preferred.
- Ability to think strategically and creatively, to anticipate technology trends, and to transfer that thinking into cogent plans for a large
and complex organization.
- Strong technical knowledge of computer components, various types of communications devices and computer-related equipment, supplies and facilities.
- Proven ability and extensive senior management experience in working within a complex technology environment. Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
- Proven leadership ability and significant supervisory experience in managing a sizable group of computer operators, production control specialists, systems programmers.
Special conditions of employment:
- Background check required.
- Must be able to work on-call nights and weekends as job requires.
- Must be willing to work a non-standard work week in response to Data Center requirements.
