This position will lead the definition of user interface design - the visual layout, presentation and information flow- for UC San Diego web applications/services developed by Administrative Computing & Telecommunications (ACT).

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with campus-wide committees to address UC San Diego-specific needs to ensure user interface strategy compliments and is compliant with publication and other institution-specific content standards/conventions.
  • Analyzing, developing and maintaining design methodologies (i.e. guidelines, documentation, libraries) based on standards (ISO, W3C, Section 508) to promote best practice, consistency, and streamline development.
  • Participating in the application development process, fulfilling design requirements and introducing efficiencies to streamline the development process.
  • Gathering functional requirements as part of multidisciplinary teamwork (i.e. work with clients, project teams, developers and toolset) to ensure that constituent needs are met and that user-centered aesthetically pleasing design and navigation is achieved.
  • Developing solutions and providing teams with design specifications, wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes.
  • Making formal and informal presentations to management outlining research and recommendations.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or B.A. degree and a minimum of three to five years in User Interface Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction or like field.
  • Experience in user-centered design demonstrated knowledge of web design skills, web architecture principles and familiarity with web accessibility norms, guidelines including standards (ISO, W3C, Section 508 ADA).
  • Experience using graphics and prototyping software ability to prototype the visual layout of web-based applications including the interaction between visual interfaces and web-based applications/ services.
  • Understanding of Internet technologies, including web tools and third-party applications (typical tools and technologies: JavaScript, AJAX, .NET, Flash, HTML, XML, SSL, CSS and others) proficient with HTML and HTML editors.
  • Experience writing design specifications from which programmers develop user interfaces for web- based applications/services experience in written and verbal communications that express complex or technical content in understandable terms.
  • Demonstrated leadership and skill in effective verbal communication.
  • Experience with the software development process, including requirements gathering, analysis and design, selection of tools and techniques, release and version control and testing methodologies.
